Matt Palmer is known for his artfully observed images and for his ability to capture the heart of a story, deriving earnest emotion from his subjects and in turn his viewers. A passionate storyteller, Matt goes above and beyond to seek out the magic of moments and he is very at home with intimate, guerilla style shoots.
Matt’s performance work combines comedy and real life. With a knack for finding the comedy in truth, there’s an understated English subtlety to his comedy work, which is often described by his wife as “mildly amusing”.
Born and raised in Auckland, Matt Palmer dropped out of art school in the mid 80’s to work at Silver Screen Productions assisting the now legendary art director, Geoff Dixon.
After a string of art directing gigs with Paul Middleditch and Richard Gibson in the 90’s, Matt took the leap and began directing his own short films and music videos. This was the beginning of what has turned out to be an extensive and diverse career directing big budget commercials in Australia and New Zealand.
Akin to his school buddy, director and co-owner Josh Frizzell, Matt comes from an artistic lineage and is himself an accomplished visual artist, specialising in portraits and landscapes.
